First Featured Mahanoy Football Alumni
Charles (Chick) Thomas Trusky
Chick, as everyone calls him, graduated from Mahanoy City High School in
the Class of 1949. The Hills Terrace native (Mahanoy Township resident) was
allowed to play for Mahanoy City as long as he played football and baseball and
as a result his tuition was waved.
He played for the Maroons under head coach, Al Matuza, his junior year
and completed his senior season under Coach Al Saduski. He wore #40 and played
tail back in the single wing and linebacker in the 6-2 defense for the Maroons.
This very gentle and humble man in any social setting was known for his extreme
aggressiveness and hard play on the field. Mahanoy City High School played an 11
game schedule, with the home field being the East End Park Stadium. The season ended with a Thanksgiving Day game with arch rival Shenandoah.
Chick’s family includes his wife of 62 years, Lydia, who he started
dating during his junior year of high school and lovingly refers to her as his
right arm. Lydia was a banner bearer for MCHS. He has two daughters, Diane and
Lydia, and son, Jim, who also wore #40 to honor his
father.
Upon graduating from Mahanoy City, Chick was drafted in the Korean War
and served as an Army Combat Engineer, serving a year and a half in Germany
guarding the US/USSR border zone of occupation during the Cold War. After the
war he worked at the St. Nicholas Breaker for a short time, and then for the
rest of his life he worked as a skilled machinist in the area until retirement.
Living in Mahanoy City, he has been an ardent supporter of many youth organizations, but none more than Mahanoy Area
football.
